Irregular Verbs Exercises and Worksheets

Following my recent post about the printable irregular verbs posters, I’d like to show you, my fellow English teachers, some of my printable worksheets that I use to help my young students memorize dozens of English irregular verbs. These grammar worksheets offer my students some memory stimulating exercises and activities such as matching different forms of irregular verbs and relevant pictures, filling in the blanks in the lists of verbs (adding the missing verb form) and sentences in the past simple and present perfect tenses.

As usual, my worksheets incorporate a lot of pictures because I believe that visually enhanced teaching materials are the best for memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules in English. The worksheets feature a lot of the same pictures that I used for the irregular verbs charts (posters). That’s why I included the posters into the irregular verbs kit that my fellow EFL and ESL teachers can purchase in printer-friendly PDF files if they believe that such grammar resources would be great for their classes too. The combination of the worksheets and posters indeed makes learning of irregular verbs more effective and memorable for kids.

So here are a few examples of my printable irregular verb exercises and worksheets.

Fill in the Blanks Exercises

There are two types of fill in the blanks exercises in my irregular verbs kit. The simplest one suggests adding the missing verb form: the base form, the past form or the past participle form. This is a basic irregular verb exercise that even the youngest English learners can do. As an EFL teacher, I usually start offering these exercises to the grade 4 students. I guess that ESL teachers and those teachers who work with native speaking kids might want to use these worksheets as early as in grade 2 or grade 3. There are 16 such worksheets in the kit featuring 96 irregular verbs.

Another kind of fill in the blanks exercises suggests adding the right irregular verb in the correct form to the sentences in the past simple tense and the present perfect tense. I offer these exercises to middle school kids as well as to high school students to whom I teach English as foreign language. Such sentence-based exercises are also good for deeper grammar learning as they offer multiple examples of usage of past simple and present perfect tenses in different contexts. There are 72 past simple sentences and 66 present perfect sentences in the fill in the blanks set.

Matching Worksheets

Matching worksheets are another type of relatively easy activity that I offer to my young students starting from grade 4. I ask them to correctly match three forms of irregular verbs and the picture representing the verb. There are 21 such worksheets as shown below in the irregular verbs kit.
