As an English teacher, I am always looking for ways to help my students expand their vocabulary and improve their language skills. One way I have found to be particularly effective is teaching homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, such as "write" and "right", "son" and "sun", or "I" and "eye". Learning homophones can expand students' vocabulary and improve their spelling and grammar skills.

I have designed 3 printable posters and a bunch of flashcards to integrate them into my English classes dedicated to feelings, emotions, and mood. Irregular Verbs Exercises and Worksheets

Following my recent post about the printable irregular verbs posters, I’d like to show you, my fellow English teachers, some of my printable worksheets that I use to help my young students memorize dozens of English irregular verbs. These grammar worksheets offer my students some memory stimulating exercises and activities such as matching different forms of irregular verbs and relevant pictures, filling in the blanks in the lists of verbs (adding the missing verb form) and sentences in the past simple and present perfect tenses.

Irregular Verb Charts - Printable Posters

Irregular verbs are one of the most challenging aspects of English grammar for non-native speakers and especially for kids. There are a lot of irregular verbs along with their confusing forms in English which makes it impossible for young students to memorize them quickly and easily. When I was at school I had to learn lists of irregular verbs and their past simple and past participle forms by heart. But it was hard to hold them in my memory for a long time anyway. It was a boring and painful experience. Now, being an English teacher, I ask myself what I can do to help kids memorize common irregular verbs without turning the process into a torture for their brains. And as you know, my go-to method of teaching English vocabulary to children is visualizing things. You might have already seen my irregular verb flashcards and puzzles. And recently I decided to design printable irregular verb charts in the form of posters incorporating pictures to visualize 100 verbs.

Prepositions Worksheets

As the readers of my blog know, I do my best to make my English classes as fun as possible for my young students. It’s important for my students who learn English as foreign language to love English classes from the very beginning as it motivates them to make efforts in memorizing unknown words and spending time figuring out the tricky grammar of the new language. So I tend to create my own printable worksheets based on tried-and-true exercises I had a positive experience with when teaching English to elementary school kids. I designed this printable 12-page activity book to be used for my English classes dedicated to prepositions of place. The PDF-based book features exercises that help elementary learners practice usage of such prepositions as on, in, under (below), behind, in front of, between, next to (beside), near, above. The worksheets also help me introduce the there is / there are structure to kids as well as revise the verb to be in the third person.

The preposition worksheets include matching activities, filling in the blanks exercises, multiple choice exercises and some others. I hope my fellow EFL and ESL teachers will find my printable prepositions worksheets useful for their classes too. 170+ English Phonics Worksheets

English language is notorious for its weird phonetics. All too often learning how to spell English words can be frustrating for non-native speakers. Being an EFL teacher working with elementary and middle school kids, I learned it the hard way. Many of my young students used to get bored or frustrated with all this crazy phonics stuff. Indeed, it seems that there are as many exceptions as there are rules in English phonetics. Even adult students find their heads spinning when they learn that words floor, flood, food are pronounced differently. There are plenty of such cases when the same letter or combination of letters form different sounds and often inexplicably. It can pretty much confuse kids who are just starting to learning English in non-English speaking countries. It is also a big challenge for EFL and ESL teachers because they have to add as much fun to their lessons as possible to make kids fall in love with learning English from the very beginning. Unfortunately, there is not too much fun in learning baffling English phonics rules and numerous exceptions. Therefore I have designed another collection of printable phonics worksheets to help my young students learn how to correctly write and pronounce a lot of tricky English words. These worksheets are designed to make English phonetics less boring and intimidating. The worksheets are also great for memorizing such words and thus strengthening students' vocabulary thanks to many colorful pictures that I used to design these teaching printables.

I offer my students the phonics worksheets after I introduce and discuss the key phonics rules including how to pronounce English diphthongs, digraphs, blends etc. I use my printable sound charts and phonics posters for the introduction.

The collection includes more than 170 printable phonics worksheets that offer mostly matching activities. There is a set of worksheets that help my students memorize symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The IPA is very important for non-native English learners as major dictionaries use the IPA for transcription of words. The IPA phonetic transcription is frequently the only way EFL students can learn the right way to pronounce this or another English word.

• matching API symbols to words; 
• matching words having the same sound.

Reading Comprehension Worksheets: Short Word Stories

I shared some of my animal-related reading comprehension worksheets on social networks, and my fellow EFL and ESL teachers found them rather interesting. So I’d like to demonstrate another type of reading comprehension passages that I use for my English classes.

I love this trick when I ask early readers to read a relatively long and seemingly intimidating English text, and they suddenly realize they can easily read it and understand most of it. Their reaction is always very positive and they feel proud of their reading accomplishments. So I write these reading comprehension passages consisting only of short words (mostly three-letter words and a few four-letter words). I often use these passages with my elementary school students (first and second grade) as well as with older kids who struggle to learn English as a foreign language.

I have written six short-word reading comprehension passages so far. I call them short word stories. And I have recently decided to add some tasks and questions to the stories to turn simple texts into colorful printable worksheets that would be more appealing to elementary school children. Such reading comprehension worksheets definitely bring more fun to the classroom and encourage kids to further develop their English reading fluency.

This is the second printable reading comprehension passage from my animal-related reading comprehension kit that I share on my blog. As usual the worksheets incorporate the short text about an animal (this time it's a cow) followed by questions and tasks such as true or false statements. The second worksheet is the same passage with some nouns replaced with pictures. The reading comprehension passage goes as follows:

Anna is a cow. She lives on a farm with her family. She is a mother to a cute calf. Anna’s husband is a big and strong bull. Anna eats grass and gives milk. When she is not too busy, she spends time with other animals that live on the farm. Her best friends are horses, sheep, and goats.

Reading Comprehension Worksheets: Thomas the Cat

I begin publishing some of my printable reading comprehension worksheets dedicated to animals. I’d like to start with a comprehension passage about a black cat named Tom. The passage goes like this:

Tom is a black cat. He lives in a house. He drinks milk and eats cat food. His master gives him fish sometimes. After each meal he licks himself to clean his fur. Tom is a little cat, and his master calls him kitten. Tom loves to play with a ball of yarn. He pretends to see a rat, he runs to catch it. He meows when he is hungry and purrs when he feels happy.
