How Printable Scavenger Hunts Turn English Practice Into an Adventure Kids Beg For

We've been teaching English to kids long enough to know the truth about flashcards: they work, but only when the child is willing. The minute the child senses they're being drilled, the door slams shut.

Feelings & Emotions Posters and Flashcards

I have designed 3 printable posters and a bunch of flashcards to integrate them into my English classes dedicated to feelings, emotions, and mood. The posters and flashcards depict 48 feelings, emotions and states of mind using images of kids that look like Pixar cartoon characters. It’s probably the biggest feelings and emotions chart you can find on printables designed to help EFL and ESL students develop a richer emotional vocabulary.

Word Families - 154 Printable Flashcards

I have designed 154 printable flashcards featuring word families. Originally I created a small bunch of such cards with most common word families to teach my little son to read in English. My son has been learning English as a foreign language since childhood so, when he was a toddler, I started to design printable reading cards incorporating lists of words with a common ending (up to 12 words on each flashcard) and up to 9 pictures representing some of the words. The rhyming words made it easier for my son to start reading in English while observing and getting used to the spelling patterns of English words. The bright pictures helped me draw his attention to the cards and let him memorize some useful words thus expanding his vocabulary.

Later I decided to use the word family flashcards for my English classes with young students. The kids seemed to love the picture cards, and over time I made even more flashcards for my EFL teaching practice. At the moment my printable word family set counts 154 cards. There are more than 870 words illustrated with child-appealing pictures incorporated on the flashcards.

Phonics Game

Being an EFL teacher, I pay special attention to teaching phonics to my students. Unlike native speakers, the kids who study English as a foreign language are not fully emerged into the language so they have a hard time figuring out how to pronounce many English words correctly. And we all know how crazy the English phonetics can be. When I show my students how the letter o can make as many as 9 sounds in different words or introduce the letter combination ou in such words as soup, mouse, shoulder, couple, four, flour, journalist, carousel with 8 different pronunciations, they get a little bit puzzled. No wonder English phonics are often a major challenge for EFL and ESL students. That’s why I design all sorts of printable phonics worksheets, charts, flash cards, posters, and games to help my young students learn phonics in a fun and memorable manner.

I have recently designed a printable board game for my English classes dedicated to phonics. The purpose of the game is to help young English learners memorize basic phonics rules, exceptions and some tricky words as well as to correctly identify sounds and tell the difference between them. I designed 15 different game boards to play with more than 550 word cards.

CVC Words Flashcards

CVC words are perfect for my elementary school students who started learning English just a few months ago. These short words are easy to memorize, so they are the instant passive vocabulary for non-native speaking kids I teach English to. That is why, when teaching basic English reading rules with CVC words, I do my best to help children memorize those words. I design my printable teaching materials accordingly: with a lot of pictures and word-to-picture matching tasks. I have recently designed a set of printable CVC words flashcards to make learning CVC words even more fun for my young students.

American English vs. British English Matching Cards

Thanks to Hollywood English language got pretty much Americanized. Even in the conservative United Kingdom young people use more and more American words. Non-native speakers mix American English and British English very frequently too, mostly unwittingly. However it is important for English learners to be able to tell apart American and British variations of some key words in order to use them correctly. After all, we want to sound properly and accurately to the audience we communicate with because all too often our language defines our competence and the first impression of us. Therefore I offer my young students a large set of printable cards designed to help them memorize some commonly used words that differ from each other in American and British English.

The American English vs. British English set features 84 word pairs. The cards can be used both as visual aids to introduce the relevant vocabulary and as a set-up for word-to-picture matching activities. Such visually enhanced activities tend to be conducive to long-term memory. By using these cards, EFL and ESL teachers can raise children’s awareness of differences between American English and British English as well as expand students’ vocabulary with some useful words.

Global Warming Reading Comprehension, Worksheets, Flashcards

The issue of global warming has been widely discussed at the highest governmental and scientific levels recently. The issue is indeed very serious. It threatens with a lot of negative consequences for nature and humans. We can only hope that the future generation will be more wise and inventive than us to successfully mitigate the effects of global warming. Our children’s and grandchildren’s well-being is largely dependent on how well they understand the problem and the ways to tackle it. As a teacher and a mother I simply cannot ignore the dangers of climate change caused by human-induced global warming. I ought to educate my students about the issue and the related risks they will have to face and hopefully find a solution to eliminate or reduce those risks. There are not enough teaching materials on the topic adapted for the classroom that can be found on the Internet, so I decided to create my own printable global warming kit for my English classes. The kit is based on short reading comprehension passages and also includes a few worksheets and a set of printable flashcards to be used for vocabulary introduction and discussion of the topic.

Reading Comprehension Passages

The global warming kit is built around three reading comprehension passages. The first and the largest one introduces the global warming issue in general, and the other two briefly tell about the greenhouse effect and the problem of ocean acidification caused by the increase of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. The texts are followed by questions and assignments.

Vocabulary Cards: Same Word - Different Meanings

Finding something special about words is a great method to grab kids’ attention and activate their memory. For example, at the early stages of studying English, I introduce “very special” short words consisting of only three letters to my youngest students (see my three-letter word search worksheets and short words reading comprehension passages). All this hype about those words being unusual and special gets children excited about learning them and thus helps even kindergarten kids build their first English vocabulary as easy as can be.

Another kind of special words I love to introduce to my students are those having multiple and often unexpected meanings. These words are really interesting to learn for kids. I have designed some printable vocabulary building cards featuring such words and their meanings illustrated with pictures. These are such words as arms, bark, bat, bow, button, chest, comb, crane, fan, key, letter, mouse, nail, note, nut, plant, seal, sink, table, trunk.

All these flashcards and worksheets constitute a reading comprehension kit.

Printable Flashcards: Animal Sounds. Part 1.

In my recent blog posts about my reading comprehension kit dedicated to animals I mentioned that I had created more than 280 printable flashcards to help elementary school students expand their English vocabulary for the topic of animals along with developing their reading fluency. And since a few of the reading passages have vocabulary related to sounds of animals, I could not help including some relevant flashcards to the set. So I have designed 39 animal sounds flashcards and I'm starting to share some of them with my fellow ESL and EFL teachers.
