American English vs. British English Matching Cards

Thanks to Hollywood English language got pretty much Americanized. Even in the conservative United Kingdom young people use more and more American words. Non-native speakers mix American English and British English very frequently too, mostly unwittingly. However it is important for English learners to be able to tell apart American and British variations of some key words in order to use them correctly. After all, we want to sound properly and accurately to the audience we communicate with because all too often our language defines our competence and the first impression of us. Therefore I offer my young students a large set of printable cards designed to help them memorize some commonly used words that differ from each other in American and British English.

The American English vs. British English set features 84 word pairs. The cards can be used both as visual aids to introduce the relevant vocabulary and as a set-up for word-to-picture matching activities. Such visually enhanced activities tend to be conducive to long-term memory. By using these cards, EFL and ESL teachers can raise children’s awareness of differences between American English and British English as well as expand students’ vocabulary with some useful words.

This is how my printable American English vs. British English cards look like.

ESL Game: Alphabet Puzzle

English teachers working with kids, especially with those who learn English as second language, have to face one of the biggest challenges a teacher has to deal with. The challenge is keeping young learners entertained while learning the language. Although little kids' brains are brilliant in memorizing things and absorbing a new language, it's extremely hard to make children learn something when they are bored. Their attention span is to short to focus on something boring. The traditional English teaching approaches used for adult learners do not work for preschoolers and elementary school student, let along toddlers whose moms want them to learn English as early as possible. Teach children like adults and you'll see them fidgeting and yawning throughout the entire lesson with almost no success in learning the language. So that's why ESL teachers have to resort to using fun activities, games, songs, colorful pictures and cartoons to grab kids' attention and create that atmosphere of fun and excitement where children's brains get ready to memorize letters, vocabulary and phonetics with and astonishing ease.

Unfortunately, all those games, flashcards, worksheets, songs and movies require a great deal of time, efforts and money for teachers to get or create them. I thought I'd create some teaching materials including printable worksheets and games to spare ESL teachers' time a little bit and let them take care of their personal needs besides getting occupied with their professional stuff.

Teaching English to Kids

There are a few reasons why you may want your kids to learn to speak English. It may be that your family has moved to a country where English is spoken, or you may have a situation where English is not usually spoken at home but you want your children to learn to speak the language as contact with persons outside of the home and your community increases. In other cases, you may be living in a country where English is not natively spoken, but you want your children to learn the language as early a possible, so that they will eventually be able to communicate like native speakers of the language. Whatever your reasons or motivations, teaching your children to speak English is not as difficult as it may seem at first. There are a few ground rules, tips and trick that you can used to have your kids speaking and reading (if they are old enough!) English in no time.

Free Clip Art for Teachers: Wild Animals

When working on animation videos for my ESL Youtube channel, my husband creates multiple illustrations. I think it’s a good idea to share these images as clip art for teachers to help my colleagues from all over the world make their English lessons more exciting for kids.

Last time my husband created a set of illustration was when he was creating the “I Can” song for which he needed to draw wild animals. So below you can find pictures of wild animals he created. You can use these royalty free images as you wish for your lessons. They can be used to make flashcards or other printable stuff. Enjoy!

Snowflakes Song for Kids

It's winter now and we have a wonderful opportunity to teach our children some winter vocabulary. One of the most fascinating things about winter is, of course, snow and those tiny beautiful snowflakes falling softly from the sky. So I would like to share my Snowflakes Song with fellow teachers and parents. This song is very simple and can be used for preschool and kindergarten children from 3 to 6 years old.

Here are the Snowflakes Song lyrics

Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Falling, falling, falling, falling to the ground.
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Flying, flying, flying, flying all around.

Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Dance in the air.
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Everywhere.
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Fly around.
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Touch the ground.

Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Falling, falling, falling, falling to the ground.
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Flying, flying, flying, flying all around.

Free Clip Art for Teachers: Forest Animals

When educating kids lots of teachers add visuals to their teaching materials. It's kind of important because little children learn things about the world mostly from visual perception of objects around them. It is not always possible to show real physical objects or living beings in the classroom, and describing them with mere words without showing at least a simple picture may be a futile attempt to teach something to little ones. Necessity of visual materials like clip art and flashcards is a fact of life for preschool teachers like myself. After all pictures are a great fun for children and having fun during lessons with small kids is a key to the educational success. Unfortunately, not all my fellow teachers and parents can draw and use graphic editing software or have high quality clip art available for them free of charge. That's why I decided to share some free educational clip art I have in my teacher's collection. In my first post related to clip art I would like to share a few cute cartoon images drawn by my husband for my forest animals song video.

My husband is not a big artist but at least he can draw better than I can and his drawings are just good enough to be used for my English lessons with kindergarten kids. You too can use these kid-appealing pictures for creating your own worksheets, flashcards, posters, games, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, homework pages, school websites and other teachers' stuff to make your lessons and overall teaching activities more informative, engaging and fruitful.

Well, as I said in this first clip art post I offer my fellow educators some royalty free pictures of funny looking cartoon forest animals including bear, beaver, bird, butterfly, deer, fox, frog, hare, hedgehog, mole, snake, squirrel, and wolf.

Christmas Fun Song for Kids (+ Flashcards)

Hurray! Christmas season has come! It is the most loved and exciting time of the year that requires an intensive preparation. All children must know what is needed to feel a special and unique atmosphere of Christmas. But if you are still not sure what one needs for a fun holiday, my Christmas Fun Song for kids will certainly help you out. Just listen carefully!

Here are the Christmas Fun Song lyrics

What Do You Need for Christmas Fun?

What do you need for Christmas fun,
Christmas fun, Christmas fun?
What do you need for Christmas fun
On this frosty Christmas day?

A pail of sand?
An Easter egg?
A motor boat
Or an ice-cream cone?

No! No! No! No! No!

A holly wreath,
A jolly reindeer,
Christmas cookies
A row of stockings,
Christmas tree,
Lots of gifts,
Outside we are caroling.

What do you need for Christmas fun,
Christmas fun, Christmas fun?
What do you need for Christmas fun
On this frosty Christmas day?

A watermelon?
A big umbrella?
A birthday cake?
A farmer rake?

No! No! No! No! No!

Santa’s sleigh,
Some merry elves,
Snowflakes,
Silver bells,
Snowman,
Candy canes,
Many friends to sing and play.

Autumn (Fall) Song for Children

Autumn (fall) is the season of colourful leaves. All children love walking in parks full of rich colours and pick up some crunchy leaves to put them together in a wonderful multicolour bunch. In my song I tried to convey the atmosphere of a warm autumn day as well as the children’s joy during the leaf-fall time. This autumn song and worksheets which you can find below can be used for English lessons to learn about seasons, autumn outdoor activities, and even Thanksgiving Day with kids.

Here are the song lyrics

Autumn leaves are falling,
Falling to the ground.
Autumn leaves are falling:
Yellow, red, and brown.

Falling, falling, falling
To the ground.
Falling, falling:
Yellow, red, and brown.

Pick them up and gather
In a pretty bunch,
Autumn leaves are falling
In the parks they crunch.

Falling, falling, falling
To the ground.
Falling, falling:
Yellow, red, and brown.

Rain Song for Kids

Autumn (Fall) is always considered to be a rainy season. Many people associate rain with a gloomy, sad weather when nobody has a desire to go outside. In my song I disagree with this opinion. The boy who is singing the song (as seen in the video below) personifies all children’s spontaneity and confidence in the future. He is happy in spite of any bad weather and any such troubles. That’s why teaching children and working close with them is an exciting and inspiring profession.

I wrote this rain song in one of such gloomy autumn days but I think it can be used also in spring and summer to learn the weather vocabulary.

I Am not Afraid of Rain
(Song Lyrics)

I am not afraid of rain,
‘Cause I have a big umbrella.
Outside the whole day
I will play in any weather.
In the rain I’m gonna walk
Let people say at home it’s better,
I will listen to the raindrops talk
Petter-patter, Petter-patter, Petter-patter.

As always, I would like to suggest  you a few worksheets to practice rainy weather vocabulary with your own children as well as students.

Cucumber Paper Crafts

Today I would like to present a cucumber paper craft which can be used in connection with many topics while learning English. You can speak with your pupils about wholesome food because cucumbers are considered to be very healthy and refreshing. Ask your pupils to remember what they know about this vegetable. Give them the information that cucumbers consist of 95% water. It means that we should eat these yummy green vegetables during hot summer days to keep ourselves hydrated. In winter preserved cucumbers, or pickles, are also used in many countries of the world as a wonderful component in winter dishes. So cucumbers are very important vegetables full of vitamins and microelements necessary for our body.

This craft goes with my vegies song:

Farm Animals Song for Kids

Animals are always an interesting topic for children especially those of younger age. Animal characters have been surrounding kids since almost birthday. That is why farm animals are likely to be an exciting thing for kids learning English in your classroom. It’s always stimulating to introduce funny animals in the process of education and overall development of communication abilities. There are a lot of fun game opportunities to develop language skills and imagination.

Farm Animals Song Lyrics

It’s a wonderful day!
Let’s go to the farm!

Hi, little cow! How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
The sun is so bright. The sky is so blue.
The grass is so green. Moo, moo, moo.

Hi, little duck! How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
What are you doing there in the lake?
I am swimming. Quack, quack, quack.

Hi, little horse! How are you?
I am great, thank you.
Would you like some fresh tasty hay?
Oh, with pleasure! Neigh, neigh.

Hi, little sheep! How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
What are you doing next to the barn?
I’m waiting for my master. Baa, baa, baa.

Hi, little dog! How are you?
Very well, thank you.
Why are you looking up on the roof?
The cat is sitting there. Woof, woof, woof.

Hi, little cat! How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
Come here and play with me right now.
I’m lying in the sun. Miaow, miaow, miaow.

Hi, little hen! How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
Why are you walking there in the yard?
I’m looking for some grains. Cluck, cluck, cluck.

Hi, little pig! How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
Why are you shining like a golden coin?
I’ve found a real one. Oink, oink, oink.

Farm Animals Worksheets

There are, of course, some worksheets to remember farm animals in English.

Worksheet 1: The first task is to circle the animal that is different. This is a very simple worksheet for children who don’t know the ABC yet. That is why it can be given even in preschool. Ask older learners to find a different animal and explain their choice using as an example the following sentence:

This sheep is different because it has got a flower.
