Teachers often use the phrase "sight words" for common words that young readers are expected to recognize quickly. In literacy instruction, the term can be a little broader: any word a reader can recognize automatically can become a sight word over time.
That matters because the goal is not simply to memorize the visual shape of a word. Children benefit from noticing the letters, connecting them to sounds, reading the word in context, and meeting it repeatedly in meaningful print.
