Food and Drinks Vocabulary Posters

There will be a lot of holidays and celebrations till the end of the year. And the best attribute of any holiday is, of course, tasty food. Besides major holidays such as Thanksgiving Day and Christmas, there are also a few celebrations dedicated to food according to my classroom calendar. These are National Sandwich Day on November 3, National Cake Day on November 26, National Cookie Day on December 4, and National Cupcake Day on December 15. We usually talk a lot about food with my students these days and I display my printable food and drinks vocabulary posters on the classroom walls.

Veterans Day Reading Comprehension (Free PDF)

I dedicate at least one lesson to every major American holiday. Even though my students learn English as a foreign language, I believe it is important for students to know more about the culture of the English-speaking countries. And since I focus mostly on American English, the United States’ holidays and celebrations represent a special interest for me as sources of teaching materials. When learning about American holidays, an English learner can pick up vocabulary from all areas of human life. According to my classroom calendar, the next major national holiday in the United States is Veterans Day. And I have some relevant reading comprehension materials to share with my fellow EFL and ESL teachers.

Columbus Day Worksheets and Reading Comprehension

Columbus Day is a prominent holiday in the United States of America that kids who learn English should know about. Since I mostly teach American English to kids who learn English as a foreign language, I do my best to dedicate at least a couple of classes to Columbus Day as it’s important for my students to be aware of American culture and history. For this purpose I have designed the Columbus Day reading comprehension set that includes printable worksheets and a dice game. So, in October, my middle school students are going to learn some US history as well as English vocabulary related to Christopher Columbus and his sea voyage to the New World.

Printable Halloween Worksheets, Flashcards and Games

Halloween is the closest major holiday that many English teachers dedicate their lessons to. The uniqueness of this holiday provides not only for a lot of fun activities in the classroom, but also for an opportunity to introduce the vocabulary that educators usually avoid when working with young students. This is when kids can learn some negative connotation albeit useful words such as coffin, cemetery, tombstone and so on. So I decided to design a set of printable flashcards, worksheets and games dedicated to Halloween in order to offer my young students some spooky fun and help them expand their English vocabulary in an uncommon topic.

Traditionally, my printable kit includes four types of worksheets, a bunch of colorful flashcards and two games. The kit is designed to introduce more than 30 words related to the celebration of Halloween. The full vocabulary includes the following words: alien, bat, black cat, bones, candy, cauldron, cemetery/graveyard, coffin, costume, devil/demon, Frankenstein's monster, ghost, gravestone/tombstone, haunted house, jack-o'-lantern, monster, moon, mummy, owl, pirate, potion, pumpkin, skeleton, skull, spider, spider web, troll, vampire, werewolf, witch, witch’s broom, witch’s hat, zombie.

These flashcards introduce some nouns that are featured in other printable teaching materials I created for my Christmas season English classes. My Christmas kit includes a range of activities that an ESL teacher can engage students with to help them learn more about one of the biggest holidays in the English-speaking world. Flashcards can be a fun way to make the first steps in introducing the vocabulary that can further be consolidated with the help of my printable Christmas worksheets (crosswords, word search puzzles, picture to word matching) and games (dominoes and bingo).

ESL Christmas Bingo Game

I have designed printable 5-by-5 grid cards for the Christmas bingo game that ESL teachers can use to help students consolidate the vocabulary introduced with my Christmas flashcards. This is my second favorite game after dominoes that I often play with kids I teach English to. Bingo is definitely the number one game by how much fun and excitement it can bring to the classroom.

The Christmas bingo rules are similar to those of traditional bingo. But instead of numbers there are pictures corresponding to words that kids have already learned with the help of my Christmas flashcards, crossword and word search puzzles, word and picture matching worksheets and dominoes game. Just as traditional cards my Christmas bingo card has a free space in the center. The teacher acts as an announcer calling out random words from small word cards that published bellow in this post. Those cards contain 46 English nouns from the Christmas vocabulary. There are a few additional words for synonyms (e.g., Christmas ball - Christmas bauble, gift - present, decoration - ornaments) and British variations of the word “sweater” (pullover, jumper). The goal is to fill a horizontal, vertical or diagonal pattern of five grid spaces on the card. Kids can either use a marker or chips (also published below) to mark the spaces that match the word called out by the teacher. Players can agree to continue playing until someone covers all the pictures on a card (full house).

Educators can use this set of Christmas flashcards as a visual resource to help students start learning about the holiday, its traditions, seasonal food and clothing. Then kids can carry out some tasks of Christmas worksheets I designed for my ESL Christmas kit. Those tasks include crosswords and word search puzzles, word-to-picture and picture-to-word matching. Those worksheets are based on the words featured on this Christmas flashcards set. The final step to consolidate the relevant English vocabulary is playing my Christmas games: dominoes and bingo.

Christmas Worksheets: Matching Pictures to Words

Matching pictures to words is another fun way to help kids memorize English vocabulary. Such printables make a part of my Christmas kit for which I have created a set of worksheets designed for teachers to diversify their classes dedicated to Christmas. I often use the kit during the holiday season. My little students love solving Christmas crosswords, finding words in the word search puzzles, and matching words and images with my picture-to-word and word-to-picture matching worksheets.

All my Christmas worksheets are based on the vocabulary introduced with a set of printable flashcards. The vocabulary can initially be strengthened with my Christmas dominoes. There is another fun game I designed for the purpose of memorizing and retaining the vocabulary – Christmas bingo. Those printable teaching materials cover some 50 nouns related to modern Christmas traditions, food and seasonal clothing. I hope my colorful games, flashcards and worksheets will help ESL teachers bring more fun into language learning during the most wonderful time of the year.
