Reading Comprehension Worksheets: Food and Cooking

Food and cooking are popular topics for English classes at school. That’s why I keep on designing printables dedicated to these topics to make my classes more fun and engaging for my students in elementary and middle school. Printable Halloween Crossword Puzzles

Animals Crossword Puzzles

Whenever I teach new English vocabulary to my students, I offer them some crossword puzzles to help kids memorize spelling of important words on the topic. Figuring out clues and writing them down on paper by hand is indeed good for long-term memory. So I have designed 20 printable crossword puzzles (including 4 for British English vocabulary) to help children easier memorize the spelling of more than 100 names of animals in English. Food and Drinks Crossword Puzzles

Crossword puzzles are another type of worksheets that help kids focus on spelling of English words they learn for this or another topic. Crosswords are even more effective for learning to spell words than word search puzzles as crossword tasks suggest handwriting which stimulates memory. I often include crosswords into my lesson plans as this kind of activity helps students not only memorize the vocabulary but also learn spelling of important words in a fun way. Learning to spell words would have been boring without crossword puzzles. Therefore printable crossword worksheets have become an important ingredient of the syllabus I use to teach English to kids. Transportation Worksheets: Crossword Puzzles

Crossword puzzles are another kind of worksheets I love. They are very effective for vocabulary memorization as they involve writing words with pen or pencil. Every language teacher knows than handwriting helps boost memory and the ability to retain the vocabulary. When solving a crossword puzzle, a student recalls the previously introduced vocabulary, re-processes it into words by writing them down, and re-reads those words multiple times in the course of accomplishing the task. So much brain activity involved! This kind of tasks are great for teaching kids to write and spell words. And, of course, I designed a couple of crossword worksheets for the transportation topic.

Vocabulary Building Worksheets: Three-Letter Noun Crosswords

It is impossible to teach English without classifying vocabulary into groups of words by topic, part of speech, spelling rules and whatnot. By doing so, ESL teachers introduce small and digestible chunks of vocabulary that students can easily remember and use in their communication. I’d like to share an idea of introducing some of easy three-letter nouns to kids in order to help them build and expand their active vocabulary from early years of studying English.

I have created a series of vocabulary building worksheets featuring as many as 80 three-letter nouns. These English words are small and simple enough even for beginners to remember them in no time. The nouns I introduce are also frequently used ones, so, when memorized, they will constitute a solid part of students’ active vocabulary.

I have designed the set of printable worksheets that helps students memorize the three-letter words through a variety of assignments including crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, word to picture matching and others.

With this blog post I’m starting to publish the series of vocabulary building worksheets, flashcards and games I use to teach English to kids. I hope ESL teachers from all over the world will find my teaching materials good enough to be used for their English classes too.
