Homophones Worksheets and Posters

As an English teacher, I am always looking for ways to help my students expand their vocabulary and improve their language skills. One way I have found to be particularly effective is teaching homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, such as "write" and "right", "son" and "sun", or "I" and "eye". Learning homophones can expand students' vocabulary and improve their spelling and grammar skills.

City Vocabulary Posters

According to my classroom calendar, there will be the World Tourist Day on September 27. It’ll be a great occasion to learn some relevant vocabulary. So displaying my printable city vocabulary posters would be a good idea for this day. They would help students discuss what they can see when traveling to different cities.

Printable Calendar for Classroom

I have designed a printable calendar for my classroom which will help me plan my curriculum for the entire school year. It’s a monthly calendar with holidays and all kinds of celebrations that can be fun to learn about, discuss and incorporate into lessons. Irregular Verb Charts - Printable Posters

Irregular verbs are one of the most challenging aspects of English grammar for non-native speakers and especially for kids. There are a lot of irregular verbs along with their confusing forms in English which makes it impossible for young students to memorize them quickly and easily. When I was at school I had to learn lists of irregular verbs and their past simple and past participle forms by heart. But it was hard to hold them in my memory for a long time anyway. It was a boring and painful experience. Now, being an English teacher, I ask myself what I can do to help kids memorize common irregular verbs without turning the process into a torture for their brains. And as you know, my go-to method of teaching English vocabulary to children is visualizing things. You might have already seen my irregular verb flashcards and puzzles. And recently I decided to design printable irregular verb charts in the form of posters incorporating pictures to visualize 100 verbs.

170+ English Phonics Worksheets

English language is notorious for its weird phonetics. All too often learning how to spell English words can be frustrating for non-native speakers. Being an EFL teacher working with elementary and middle school kids, I learned it the hard way. Many of my young students used to get bored or frustrated with all this crazy phonics stuff. Indeed, it seems that there are as many exceptions as there are rules in English phonetics. Even adult students find their heads spinning when they learn that words floor, flood, food are pronounced differently. There are plenty of such cases when the same letter or combination of letters form different sounds and often inexplicably. It can pretty much confuse kids who are just starting to learning English in non-English speaking countries. It is also a big challenge for EFL and ESL teachers because they have to add as much fun to their lessons as possible to make kids fall in love with learning English from the very beginning. Unfortunately, there is not too much fun in learning baffling English phonics rules and numerous exceptions. Therefore I have designed another collection of printable phonics worksheets to help my young students learn how to correctly write and pronounce a lot of tricky English words. These worksheets are designed to make English phonetics less boring and intimidating. The worksheets are also great for memorizing such words and thus strengthening students' vocabulary thanks to many colorful pictures that I used to design these teaching printables.

I offer my students the phonics worksheets after I introduce and discuss the key phonics rules including how to pronounce English diphthongs, digraphs, blends etc. I use my printable sound charts and phonics posters for the introduction.

The collection includes more than 170 printable phonics worksheets that offer mostly matching activities. There is a set of worksheets that help my students memorize symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The IPA is very important for non-native English learners as major dictionaries use the IPA for transcription of words. The IPA phonetic transcription is frequently the only way EFL students can learn the right way to pronounce this or another English word.

Matching Worksheets

My phonics worksheets offer two types of matching tasks:
  • matching API symbols to words;
  • matching words having the same sound.

Irregular Verbs Game

I remember the days when I was studying English irregular verbs at school. It was… well… boring to say the least. The concept of irregular verbs sounds weird to non-native speakers. All those irregular verbs lists and tables that many textbooks and dictionaries offer look intimidating to school kids. No wonder children have a hard time memorizing these verbs and their forms. Many grammar exercises designed to teach kids how to use irregular verbs do not boost young students’ memory either. Because all too often they are as boring as the long lists and tables in the textbooks. So I decided to add a little bit of fun into learning irregular verbs by offering my young students a printable board game. This irregular verbs game makes it easier for kids to memorize these special words and their forms thanks to lots of visually-appealing pictures and competitiveness of a game.

I have designed three printable game boards with some variations for kids to better memorize irregular verbs through a fun and visually enhanced activity. In my opinion, gamification is one of the best teaching methods to boost kids’ memory. This board game helps students memorize more than 80 English irregular verbs. Here are pictures of one of the game boards and its variations.

Printable Worksheets to Learn Animals Vocabulary

I spent a couple of months to create my currently biggest kit of printable worksheets, flashcards and games dedicated to one of the major topics ESL teachers introduce to kids starting from the kindergarten age. The topic is animals.

Buy the whole animals kit in printer-friendly PDF format
The kit includes flashcards, 4 types of worksheets, dominoes and bingo game

I have already published my songs about animals (such as Arctic Animals Song, Forest Animals Song, and Sea Animals Song) along with some printable worksheets, clip arts and other teaching materials. A lot of my printables such as letter tracing worksheets and coloring pages feature animals. It is never enough animals when teaching English to kids. There are so many children’s books, songs, movies and other entertainment and educational stuff featuring animals that those creatures became the number one topic whenever an educator wants to teach kids something. And young students truly love animals. Who doesn’t really? Animals are fun! If you want a kid to memorize something for as long as possible, make sure to involve a cute and fluffy creature into the learning process. Use pictures of animals, books and songs about them, animal puppets or even bring a small pet to the classroom. Lots of positive emotions and thus enhanced memory are guaranteed whenever animals are involved for educating kids.

The food and drinks topic is among the key subjects in my English syllabus. Knowing names of food and drinks is a must for every English learner. Food is the essential one have to take care of whenever one goes. Trying local foods is one of the most pleasant moments of any trip. Therefore if one knows some English food & drinks vocabulary, chances are he or she will enjoy partaking of a meal in a good company of friendly foreigners. Sharing food together is a good way to make new friends and business partners.

Fruits and Vegetables Bingo Game

Playing games is the happiest pastime for every kid. That’s why I use games for my English classes to consolidate the vocabulary at the final stage of learning a topic. Bingo is one of my students’ favorite games. The game makes them very excited about the chance of being a winner. This excitement generates the thrill of competition and lots of emotions. People tend to better remember things that involve emotions. No doubt, such games help English learners retain the vocabulary in their memories for a very long time if not forever. If you are teaching English names of fruits, vegetables, berries and nuts then you are going to love my printable fruits & vegetables bingo game.

The kit includes flashcards, 4 types of worksheets, dominoes and bingo game

I publish only five bingo cards here. The whole fruits and vegetables kit has different types of printable fruits and vegetables worksheets, flashcards, domino cards and 15 bingo cards that can be used with larger groups of students.

I often include crosswords into my lesson plans as this kind of activity helps students not only memorize the vocabulary but also learn spelling of important words in a fun way. Today, I’d like to share some printable crossword puzzles I offer to my students when learning the clothes and accessories vocabulary.
