As an English teacher, I am always looking for ways to help my students expand their vocabulary and improve their language skills. One way I have found to be particularly effective is teaching homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, such as "write" and "right", "son" and "sun", or "I" and "eye". Learning homophones can expand students' vocabulary and improve their spelling and grammar skills.

Alphabet Learning Worksheets (Free PDF)

I have recently created another bunch of printable worksheets that offer elementary school students some fun activities to better memorize the English alphabet as well as learn basic vocabulary. These worksheets are good for non-native speaking kids who finished learning all the ABC letters as well as relevant words starting with these letters and they now need to strengthen this knowledge through activities. Using these printables, I'll ask my young students to circle pictures that start with this or another letter and help a mouse reach a piece of cheese through a letter maze moving from one letter to another in the alphabetical order. Word Families Worksheets: At Words (Free PDF)

I’ve recently started to design printable word families worksheets for my English teaching practice. Looking at 154 word family flashcards I created last year, I understand that it’s going to be a really long work. It’s hard to even predict how much time it will take to design worksheets for all the word families featured in the flashcards. So I decided to publish the worksheets as soon as I design them and give them away to my fellow teachers for free. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Activities

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is one of the children's books that I frequently use for my English classes with kids who learn English as a foreign language. The book is short and simple enough to read with elementary school students. Educators and parents read the story of the very hungry caterpillar with preschoolers and even toddlers in English speaking countries. However, since I teach English to children who are just starting to learn English, I mostly use the book for my classes with 1st graders. And I have designed some printable activities, worksheets, flashcards, and a poster to get the maximum out of the book as an EFL teacher. Printable Alphabet Game

This printable board game helps elementary school students remember how uppercase and lowercase letters look like in English.

My ABC games and activities mostly help kids learn to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters as well as memorize basic words that start with this or another letter. Therefore many of the games and activities suggest matching uppercase letters with lowercase letters and letters with pictures representing the words to be memorized. So here are the printables.

American English vs. British English Matching Cards

Thanks to Hollywood English language got pretty much Americanized. Even in the conservative United Kingdom young people use more and more American words. Non-native speakers mix American English and British English very frequently too, mostly unwittingly. However it is important for English learners to be able to tell apart American and British variations of some key words in order to use them correctly. After all, we want to sound properly and accurately to the audience we communicate with because all too often our language defines our competence and the first impression of us. Therefore I offer my young students a large set of printable cards designed to help them memorize some commonly used words that differ from each other in American and British English.

The American English vs. British English set features 84 word pairs. The cards can be used both as visual aids to introduce the relevant vocabulary and as a set-up for word-to-picture matching activities. Such visually enhanced activities tend to be conducive to long-term memory. Irregular Verbs Game

I remember the days when I was studying English irregular verbs at school. It was… well… boring to say the least. The concept of irregular verbs sounds weird to non-native speakers. All those irregular verbs lists and tables that many textbooks and dictionaries offer look intimidating to school kids. No wonder children have a hard time memorizing these verbs and their forms. Many grammar exercises designed to teach kids how to use irregular verbs do not boost young students’ memory either. Because all too often they are as boring as the long lists and tables in the textbooks. So I decided to add a little bit of fun into learning irregular verbs by offering my young students a printable board game. This irregular verbs game makes it easier for kids to memorize these special words and their forms thanks to lots of visually-appealing pictures and competitiveness of a game.

I have designed three printable game boards with some variations for kids to better memorize irregular verbs through a fun and visually enhanced activity. In my opinion, gamification is one of the best teaching methods to boost kids’ memory. This board game helps students memorize more than 80 English irregular verbs. Here are pictures of one of the game boards and its variations.

Vocabulary Cards: Compound Words

Teaching compound words can be another fun way to help young students expand their English vocabulary at early stages of studying the language. I use printable compound word cards to introduce some basic vocabulary to kids. The cards show what parts the compound word is made up of. These printables make it interesting for beginner English learners to see how two words merge into a single word and how the meaning of this new noun reflects the attributes of the things the merged words represent. Introducing compound words this way is memorable for preschool and elementary school students and thus helps children memorize the vocabulary pretty fast. The design of the cards allows for using them for a variety of matching activities which adds even more fun to learning compound words.

Reading CVC words is one of the first activities that educators offer children when teaching them how to sound out English words. Those consonant-vowel-consonant words are short and simple and therefore they are great for helping kids learn to read letters and pronounce sounds correctly. The CVC words are so simple that some parents use them to teach their children basic literacy from as early as four years old. And of course teachers offer a lot of CVC words activities to preschool, pre-k, kindergarten students. As an EFL teacher I use all sorts of CVC worksheets, games and other activities when teaching elementary school kids.

Most CVC words activities suggest reading the words aloud to pronounce consonant and short vowel sounds. If there is a mistake, a teacher or other students help the reader. Anytime we read the words though, kids start asking whether these are real words and what they mean. I seems that sometimes they got frustrated with dealing with so many words which meaning they don’t know. So I’ve got this idea that I could design printable CVC words worksheets featuring pictures of some words. Thus my students could read the words and build their basic vocabulary from the very outset of studying English.
