I’m excited to share the fourth story from my ongoing phonics project designed to help ESL and EFL teachers teach English vowel teams in a fun and effective way. This time, the focus is on the OU vowel team — one of the trickiest combinations for English learners to master.
As we know, the OU vowel team can make several different sounds, which often makes it difficult for students to predict how to pronounce new words. There seems to be no single rule, so learners simply need to get familiar with as many OU words as possible through practice, reading, and visual support.
To make this process more enjoyable, I’ve created a set of printable materials featuring the story “The Happy Toucan” — a reading passage full of OU vowel team words. Along with the story, this free resource set includes an illustrated OU words chart and fun phonics worksheets that help students remember word pronunciation and meaning through pictures and context.
“The Happy Toucan” — OU Vowel Team Reading Passage for Young Learners
The centerpiece of this OU vowel team set is an and easy-to-read story called “The Happy Toucan.” This reading passage takes students on an exciting trip to a famous amusement park in Brazil called “The Happy Toucan”, filled with rides, playgrounds, and colorful attractions. It’s a perfect way to introduce OU words in context while helping children develop their reading and pronunciation skills.
In this story, two journalists visit the amusement park to write about it for their newspaper. They meet families, children, and friendly costumed characters — including a cute cartoon cat and mouse welcoming visitors near a sparkling fountain. The park is surrounded by mountains, with talking parrots, beautiful toucans, and playful monkeys that delight everyone.
Throughout the story, learners encounter many OU vowel team words in natural sentences — such as mountain, cloud, house, mouse, soup, route, couple, shoulder, fountain and more. Reading these words within a fun, meaningful story helps students remember their spelling and pronunciation much better than isolated drills.
Just like the other reading passages in this phonics series, “The Happy Toucan” combines phonics practice with vocabulary expansion and reading comprehension — a great balance for ESL and EFL learners who are still building their English foundation.
Illustrated OU Words Chart for ESL and EFL Learners
To help children practice reading and recognizing words with the OU vowel team, I’ve created an illustrated OU words chart. It includes colorful pictures and clearly printed words, making it an ideal visual support for your English lessons. The chart can be displayed in your classroom, added to students’ phonics notebooks, or used as part of your reading centers.
This printable resource features common OU words such as house, toucan, country, journalist, shoulder, and many others. Each word is paired with an illustration that helps children associate spelling with meaning and sound — a key step in mastering phonics for English learners.
The OU vowel team can be challenging for ESL and EFL students because it represents different sounds in words like hour, you, and country. This chart helps students build familiarity with various sound patterns through repetition and visual context, supporting both pronunciation and spelling accuracy.
OU Vowel Team Worksheets for Phonics Practice
The OU vowel team worksheets that go along with The Happy Toucan story and word charts are designed to give students plenty of opportunities to practice reading and recognizing words with the OU letter combination. These printable exercises focus on building both decoding and spelling skills through fun, picture-based activities.

Just like in my previous vowel team projects, this collection includes several types of tasks such as matching words to pictures, odd one out, and labeling activities where learners identify words that contain the OU vowel team. The worksheets encourage students to look closely at word patterns and pronunciation while reinforcing vocabulary through visual support.

In addition to these familiar formats, I’ve also added a new type of activity that asks children to match words and pictures to other words and pictures that share the same OU sound. For example, students may pair cloud with mountain or soup with toucan — helping them recognize which words share similar sound patterns. This makes phonics practice more dynamic and helps learners better understand sound variations in English.

These OU vowel team phonics worksheets are perfect for ESL and EFL classrooms, homeschool lessons, and small group reading activities. They make learning vowel teams engaging, hands-on, and effective for young English learners.
