IE Vowel Team Reading Passage, Words Chart and Worksheets (Free PDF)

Welcome back to my ongoing project dedicated to helping young English learners explore the wonderful world of vowel teams through engaging stories, fun worksheets, and illustrated vocabulary charts! If you're new here, I'm an ESL/EFL teacher and content creator sharing my printable materials to support fellow educators around the world.

This is the third blog post in my phonics series, and today’s spotlight is on the vowel team “IE”. Just like in my previous posts on the “EA” and “OO” vowel combinations, I’ve created a complete printable pack filled with illustrated charts, matching and labeling worksheets, and an original reading passage – this time about two friends visiting a bakery... and a mischievous magpie!

You can download the whole printable set as a printer-ready PDF. I hope this project continues to be a valuable resource in your classroom or homeschool phonics lessons.

IE Vowel Team Reading Passage

The heart of this IE vowel team set is a delightful short story written especially for young English learners. In this short story, a young scientist and his friend visit a bakery famous for its delicious pies and warm brownies. But things take an unexpected turn when a sneaky thief tries to steal a bike just outside the bakery. Luckily, the scientist quickly calls for help, and a nearby police officer stops the thief just in time! As a thank-you, they invite the officer to join them for a slice of pie. But just when they think the excitement is over, a mischievous magpie swoops down and steals a shiny spoon from their table! What follows is a hilarious chase through a nearby field as all three try to get the spoon back.

This story is packed with vocabulary that includes the "ie" vowel team. Young readers will come across words like friend, pie, brownie, thief, field, and magpie. These words are naturally embedded into the story so students can hear and see them used in context.

This reading activity makes vowel sound practice meaningful and memorable for your learners. It's a great way to support pronunciation, vocabulary growth, and comprehension all at once.

IE Vowel Team Word Chart with Illustrations

To help young English learners memorize and recognize the “IE” vowel team, I’ve created an illustrated word chart that highlights some common and useful “IE” words.

This chart features kid-friendly illustrations that match each word, making it easy for children to associate the spelling pattern with a visual cue. It’s a perfect tool to introduce the “IE” vowel team before diving into the worksheets or reading passage.

Some of the words included on the chart are: pie, thief, field, cookie, scientist, soldier, friend and more.

Teachers can use this chart during class discussions, phonics lessons, or as a visual support during reading and writing tasks. It’s also ideal for posting on classroom walls or including in students’ individual learning folders.

Engaging IE Vowel Team Worksheets for Young Learners

To help students practice and reinforce their understanding of the "IE vowel team, I’ve created three types of printable worksheets. Each type targets different skills and offers a fun, visual way to work with "IE words.

The first type of worksheet is a word-to-picture matching activity. Students are asked to draw lines between “IE” words and their corresponding pictures. Words like genie, cashier, priest, and scientist come to life with bright visuals, making this a great activity for vocabulary building and phonics reinforcement.

The second worksheet type is the odd-one-out activity. Each set contains three words or pictures, and students must spot which one doesn’t contain the “ie” vowel team. It’s a great way to develop phonemic awareness and attention to spelling patterns.

The third type invites students to label objects with “ie” words. Students look at an illustrated scene and write the correct “IE word next to the matching object. This worksheet encourages writing and spelling practice while reinforcing word-picture connections.

All three worksheet types are designed to be visually engaging and simple enough for early learners, while still offering meaningful phonics practice. Whether used for in-class work, homework, or small group activities, these resources are a great addition to any phonics curriculum.
