Reading Comprehension to Learn Numbers and Counting

I’d like to share some of my printable reading comprehension worksheets that I use to teach English numbers to my young students. I try to add more fun to my English classes in elementary school and that’s why I design visually appealing reading comprehension kits that include worksheets and flashcards. My previous blog post dedicated to reading comprehension passages about animals proved to be very popular with my fellow EFL and ESL teachers, so I decided to share some more of such printable resources, this time designed to teach cardinal & ordinal numbers and counting.

The numbers & counting reading comprehension kit includes printable worksheets built around 5 short reading comprehension passages and flashcards featuring numbers and their names in English. The flashcards have a cut-out part that can be used for number-to-word matching activities. Below you can find some of the printables belonging to this kit.

CVC Words Flashcards

CVC words are perfect for my elementary school students who started learning English just a few months ago. These short words are easy to memorize, so they are the instant passive vocabulary for non-native speaking kids I teach English to. That is why, when teaching basic English reading rules with CVC words, I do my best to help children memorize those words. I design my printable teaching materials accordingly: with a lot of pictures and word-to-picture matching tasks. I have recently designed a set of printable CVC words flashcards to make learning CVC words even more fun for my young students.

The kit includes 116 flashcards, 5 charts and 15 matching worksheets

There are 116 printable flashcards designed to visualize CVC words for elementary ESL and EFL students and thus stimulate their memory in order to expand their English vocabulary from the very outset. Vowel Teams - Printable Posters

The concept of two or more letters spelling a single sound (digraphs, trigraphs and quadgraphs) or two sounds coming together to create a new sound (diphthongs) can be confusing for young non-native English speakers. I teach English to kids whose native language does not have diphthongs, and digraphs are rare things for this language. Yet in English digraphs and diphthongs are very common, so kids must learn how to spell them correctly. When working with elementary school students, I call digraphs and diphthongs vowel teams and consonant teams. I help kids imagine letters being pals and working together to form sounds. Imagining letters as cartoon characters allowed me to create all sorts of activities and icebreakers in the classroom. I also design visuals to help students better memorize common letter teams and sounds they make. Printable posters featuring vowel teams and consonant teams are among my best visual teaching materials for digraphs and diphthongs.

I’m a big fan of visuals for teaching English. I believe such materials are very much conducive to memory of preschool and elementary school children. Even when we get aquainted with English phonics and learn how to spell letters, I do my best to offer as many relevant visuals as possible for kids to memorize new vocabulary through associating words with pictures. Such association is natural for children. Reading lists of words to train spelling of various digraphs is not as good as reading lists of words with pictures around them to train spelling and memorize some useful vocabulary at the same time. That is why I love the concept of printable visually-enhanced posters featuring words and corresponding images for students to different spelling patterns involving vowel teams and consonant teams. I have designed 30 such posters so far.

Alphabet Games and Activities

I do my best to excite my grade 1 students about learning English from the first months of studying in my classroom. Since we usually begin with learning English alphabet, I offer them different kinds of games and activities to make learning letters even more fun. There is a set of printable games and activities I designed to help my young students learn English ABC in a fun and memorable way. I’d like to share my alphabet learning printables in this blog post.

Printable Alphabet Game

This printable board game helps elementary school students remember how uppercase and lowercase letters look like in English.

My ABC games and activities mostly help kids learn to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters as well as memorize basic words that start with this or another letter. Therefore many of the games and activities suggest matching uppercase letters with lowercase letters and letters with pictures representing the words to be memorized. So here are the printables.

School Vocabulary Posters

My young students have returned to school this month after their long summer vacations. They are not native English speakers, so one of the first things we started to do in the classroom is trying to remember the important vocabulary related to school supplies, classroom objects and other school words we used to learn. There are new kids as well this year. And I start introducing the school-related words to them from the very first class.

To make it more fun for kids to memorize or recall the school vocabulary, I use my printable vocabulary posters. There are four of them featuring school supplies, school subjects, classroom objects and other relevant English vocabulary. Here is the list of 56 words featured on my school vocabulary posters.

Indefinite Articles Worksheets: A or An?

Indefinite articles a and an are one of the first grammar concepts my young students learn about in my English classes. It’s not an easy concept for them to comprehend as their native language does not have articles at all. The need to use different articles depending on the first sound of the following word does not make the concept easier for my elementary school students. That’s why we have to pay a special attention to English articles and practice their usage. And to make it more fun, I have designed 15 printable worksheets to organize initial practice activities for the kids.

As usual, I used a lot of child-appealing pictures to design these a/an articles worksheets. Not only do they help students better understand the grammar concept and practice usage of indefinite articles, they also help them memorize some useful words and expand their English vocabulary.

Short A Sound Worksheets, Flashcards, Posters, Reading Comprehension

I have designed a lot of printable resources to teach English sounds to my young students. The growing number of phonics-related teaching materials makes it harder for visitors of this blog to find the entire range of printables they might want to use for their English classes too. So I decided to publish a series of posts dedicated to individual sounds that would combine relevant resources from different articles published on my blog earlier. I’d like to start with worksheets, flashcards, posters, reading comprehension passages designed to teach the short a sound to EFL and ESL students.

170+ English Phonics Worksheets

English language is notorious for its weird phonetics. All too often learning how to spell English words can be frustrating for non-native speakers. Being an EFL teacher working with elementary and middle school kids, I learned it the hard way. Many of my young students used to get bored or frustrated with all this crazy phonics stuff. Indeed, it seems that there are as many exceptions as there are rules in English phonetics. Even adult students find their heads spinning when they learn that words floor, flood, food are pronounced differently. There are plenty of such cases when the same letter or combination of letters form different sounds and often inexplicably. It can pretty much confuse kids who are just starting to learning English in non-English speaking countries. It is also a big challenge for EFL and ESL teachers because they have to add as much fun to their lessons as possible to make kids fall in love with learning English from the very beginning. Unfortunately, there is not too much fun in learning baffling English phonics rules and numerous exceptions. Therefore I have designed another collection of printable phonics worksheets to help my young students learn how to correctly write and pronounce a lot of tricky English words. These worksheets are designed to make English phonetics less boring and intimidating. The worksheets are also great for memorizing such words and thus strengthening students' vocabulary thanks to many colorful pictures that I used to design these teaching printables.

I offer my students the phonics worksheets after I introduce and discuss the key phonics rules including how to pronounce English diphthongs, digraphs, blends etc. I use my printable sound charts and phonics posters for the introduction.

The collection includes more than 170 printable phonics worksheets that offer mostly matching activities. There is a set of worksheets that help my students memorize symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The IPA is very important for non-native English learners as major dictionaries use the IPA for transcription of words. The IPA phonetic transcription is frequently the only way EFL students can learn the right way to pronounce this or another English word.

Matching Worksheets

My phonics worksheets offer two types of matching tasks:
  • matching API symbols to words;
  • matching words having the same sound.

Reading Comprehension Worksheets: Food and Cooking

Food and cooking are popular topics for English classes at school. That’s why I keep on designing printables dedicated to these topics to make my classes more fun and engaging for my students in elementary and middle school. If you follow my blog, you might know that I have created a large printable kit that includes worksheets, flashcards and games dedicated to food. Silent Letters in English - Charts with Words and Pictures

Silent letters are a very interesting phenomenon in English language. I teach English to non-native speaking kids whose native language does not have letters that are not pronounced. Therefore all too often my young students find it very weird that they need not read certain letters in English words. They struggle really hard to get accustomed to these unusual and confusing spelling rules. So I decided to pay special attention to silent letters in English when I was designing my printable poster-sized phonics charts. I’ve created multiple charts featuring words with silent letters or letter combinations along with relevant pictures in order to make those charts child-appealing. The charts feature nouns that can be easily illustrated.

I’m sure there are multiple languages in the world that do not have such thing as silent letters (e.g. Spanish and many Slavic languages). I hope my printable charts will help my fellow EFL and ESL teachers introduce silent letters in a visually appealing way to novice English learners speaking these languages.

Why Visually Stimulating Material Helps Kids Learn English Better

Teaching primary kids English, is becoming easier with the advent of classroom technology. It wasn’t long ago that a grade 3 teacher had to purchase non-customizable task cards to re-use class after class, or try and painstakingly create her own task cards, with limited design skills, Microsoft Word and the school printer, then cut out!

By introducing meaningful visual elements to the curriculum, educators can help students with information retention and being truly engaged. In school, a child receives a multitude of visual messages daily, so teachers are essentially competing with the kid’s attention span. By turning learning into a game with fun school clip art and custom task cards, the child has a better chance of performing and studies have also shown that children who are taught with visuals, get better grades and report cards.

English Worksheets and Other Printables for Grade 1

A big part of my students are elementary school kids. That is why I have designed a good number of printable English teaching materials for my 1st grade students. Telling Time on Clock - Rhyme-Based Worksheets

I designed a dozen printable worksheets based on my nursery rhyme that I had written to teach my young student to tell the time on a clock in English. The worksheets are colorful and child-appealing. They offer a super easy activity for kids who begin learning English and telling time.

Every worksheet has two text-and-picture parts featuring a four-liner of the nursery rhyme and a clock image part that should be cut out. The clock shows the time from one o'clock to midnight. The teacher asks kids to match a clock part with the correct text-and-picture part. The clock only shows the whole hours without minutes, so the worksheets can be used as one of basic activities at the start of learning time.

Phonics Charts - Printable Posters

I have already pointed out in one of my earlier blog posts dedicated to phonics charts that studying English phonetics can be overwhelming and boring for kids. There is very little fun in learning which sound an English letter or combination of letters produces. ESL and EFL teachers know very well how difficult English pronunciation can be for non-native speaking children. Unlike singing songs, playing games and reading stories, phonics make young students get tired of English classes very quickly. In order to make learning English phonetics less challenging for my elementary school students, I have designed quite a few colorful child-appealing phonics charts and flashcards that I use in my classroom to develop kids’ phonemic awareness in a more or less fun way.

American English vs. British English Matching Cards

Thanks to Hollywood English language got pretty much Americanized. Even in the conservative United Kingdom young people use more and more American words. Non-native speakers mix American English and British English very frequently too, mostly unwittingly. However it is important for English learners to be able to tell apart American and British variations of some key words in order to use them correctly. After all, we want to sound properly and accurately to the audience we communicate with because all too often our language defines our competence and the first impression of us. Therefore I offer my young students a large set of printable cards designed to help them memorize some commonly used words that differ from each other in American and British English.

The American English vs. British English set features 84 word pairs. The cards can be used both as visual aids to introduce the relevant vocabulary and as a set-up for word-to-picture matching activities. Such visually enhanced activities tend to be conducive to long-term memory. By using these cards, EFL and ESL teachers can raise children’s awareness of differences between American English and British English as well as expand students’ vocabulary with some useful words.

This is how my printable American English vs. British English cards look like.

Irregular Verbs Game

I remember the days when I was studying English irregular verbs at school. It was… well… boring to say the least. The concept of irregular verbs sounds weird to non-native speakers. All those irregular verbs lists and tables that many textbooks and dictionaries offer look intimidating to school kids. No wonder children have a hard time memorizing these verbs and their forms. Many grammar exercises designed to teach kids how to use irregular verbs do not boost young students’ memory either. Because all too often they are as boring as the long lists and tables in the textbooks. So I decided to add a little bit of fun into learning irregular verbs by offering my young students a printable board game. This irregular verbs game makes it easier for kids to memorize these special words and their forms thanks to lots of visually-appealing pictures and competitiveness of a game.

I have designed three printable game boards with some variations for kids to better memorize irregular verbs through a fun and visually enhanced activity. In my opinion, gamification is one of the best teaching methods to boost kids’ memory. This board game helps students memorize more than 80 English irregular verbs. Here are pictures of one of the game boards and its variations.

Phonics Sounds Charts - Digraphs, Diphthongs, Letter Combinations

English is far from being an easy language when it comes to reading and spelling rules. So many inexplicable exceptions make even native speakers’ heads spin, let alone kids who begin learning English as a foreign or second language. So learning common phonics patterns is crucial but being aware of exceptions to reading rules is also important for teaching kids how to pronounce and write English words correctly. Sometimes the best way to teach English reading and spelling skills is to let young students read words with some tricky phonics patterns such as digraphs, diphthongs and other letter combinations. The more they see and read such words the better they memorize how these and similar words are pronounced. This is how so-called sight words are taught to elementary students. And this is why I have designed a set of printable phonics sounds charts for kids to read and memorize tricky spelling patterns and their correlation with pronunciation. I also use these phonics charts as an illustration of how crazy English language can be when the same letter combination is pronounced differently in different words sometimes without any reason.

Printable Alphabet Posters for Every Letter

I have designed printable English alphabet posters for every letter to display on my classroom walls. The traditional one-sheet ABC posters featuring all the letters with a single picture representing each one do not seem to grab children’s attention these days. Today’s kids are involved in a massive torrent of information and all sorts of child-appealing content through television and Internet-enabled devices. So it’s really hard to attract their eyeballs with a poster on a wall. But how about 26 colorful alphabet posters riddled with pictures? It’s something new for a modest English classroom like mine, and kids seem to love the posters I have created for them.

Global Warming Reading Comprehension, Worksheets, Flashcards

The issue of global warming has been widely discussed at the highest governmental and scientific levels recently. The issue is indeed very serious. It threatens with a lot of negative consequences for nature and humans. We can only hope that the future generation will be more wise and inventive than us to successfully mitigate the effects of global warming. Our children’s and grandchildren’s well-being is largely dependent on how well they understand the problem and the ways to tackle it. As a teacher and a mother I simply cannot ignore the dangers of climate change caused by human-induced global warming. I ought to educate my students about the issue and the related risks they will have to face and hopefully find a solution to eliminate or reduce those risks. There are not enough teaching materials on the topic adapted for the classroom that can be found on the Internet, so I decided to create my own printable global warming kit for my English classes. The kit is based on short reading comprehension passages and also includes a few worksheets and a set of printable flashcards to be used for vocabulary introduction and discussion of the topic.

Reading Comprehension Passages

The global warming kit is built around three reading comprehension passages. The first and the largest one introduces the global warming issue in general, and the other two briefly tell about the greenhouse effect and the problem of ocean acidification caused by the increase of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. The texts are followed by questions and assignments.

Beginning Consonant Blends and Digraphs: Charts and Posters

Learning blends and digraphs is an important part of developing English reading skills. Teachers should pay a lot of attention to these frequently occurring letter patterns as the ability to quickly recognize them is the key factor to reading fluency. When working with struggling readers or kids in the early stages of learning to read in English, a teacher needs to spend many hours with them practicing reading relevant words and pronouncing blends and digraphs sounds. Such monotonous activities may get boring for children pretty quickly. That is why I do my best to use bright visuals and picture-based worksheets to get young students’ attention and maintain their interest as long as possible. And I’d like to share some printable charts and posters I have designed to make my lessons dedicated to consonant blends and digraphs more visually appealing to kids.

I’m a big advocate of visual aids for young students learning foreign languages. I design a lot of own printable visuals for my English classes. I have recently designed a number of bright picture-based charts, posters and a few worksheets for my lessons dedicated to beginning consonant blends and digraphs. In this post I’d like to publish the charts and the posters. I’ll share the worksheets in one of the upcoming blog posts. I hope my fellow EFL and ESL teachers will find these resources useful too.

Vocabulary Cards: Compound Words

Teaching compound words can be another fun way to help young students expand their English vocabulary at early stages of studying the language. I use printable compound word cards to introduce some basic vocabulary to kids. The cards show what parts the compound word is made up of. These printables make it interesting for beginner English learners to see how two words merge into a single word and how the meaning of this new noun reflects the attributes of the things the merged words represent. Introducing compound words this way is memorable for preschool and elementary school students and thus helps children memorize the vocabulary pretty fast. The design of the cards allows for using them for a variety of matching activities which adds even more fun to learning compound words.

My collection of printable cards introduces the following 20 closed compound words: armchair, butterfly, catfish, cupcake, earring, fireman, football, jellyfish, lighthouse, lipstick, pancake, rainbow, raincoat, scarecrow, seahorse, snowball, snowman, starfish, sunflower, toothbrush.

Vocabulary Cards: Same Word - Different Meanings

Finding something special about words is a great method to grab kids’ attention and activate their memory. For example, at the early stages of studying English, I introduce “very special” short words consisting of only three letters to my youngest students (see my three-letter word search worksheets and short words reading comprehension passages). All this hype about those words being unusual and special gets children excited about learning them and thus helps even kindergarten kids build their first English vocabulary as easy as can be.

Another kind of special words I love to introduce to my students are those having multiple and often unexpected meanings. These words are really interesting to learn for kids. I have designed some printable vocabulary building cards featuring such words and their meanings illustrated with pictures. These are such words as arms, bark, bat, bow, button, chest, comb, crane, fan, key, letter, mouse, nail, note, nut, plant, seal, sink, table, trunk.
